PROJECTS

Ascend Summer Reading Enrichment Academy

Vision In Communities in partnership with the CME Church will pilot the 2016 Ascend Summer School Reading Enrichment Academy. This summer school program will work with 3rd and 4th graders to provide comprehensive reading and enrichment summer educational programs that enable children between the ages of 8-10 years of age to overcome what is known as the summer slide. Research has noted that summer learning loss is a critical contributor to low reading proficiency. Our pilot will work with up to 50 children across the Detroit and Flint communities.

Child Savings Ministry

In fall of 2013, Vision In Communities, in partnership with PNC Bank, CFED (Corporation for Enterprise Development), and the CME Church launched the Child’s Savings Ministry. This project helps low to moderate-income families create pathways to high education for their children by establishing a college savings account in the child’s name. Research indicates that low- and moderate-income children with college savings of just $500 or less are 3 times more likely to enroll in college and 4 times more likely to graduate. Over 8 partnering CME congregations provide seed and matching dollars for families who take the bold step to save for their child’s education. This project also offers financial education to parents and families. Over 50 children from infants to high school students across the Michigan are enrolled and saving for their college education. To date, over $35,000 dollars have been saved. In 2016, we are positioned to expand our work to other interested congregations.
